A Structured UNESCO Heritage Day in Malacca — With Lunch Handled

A heritage day that makes sense of what you are looking at

Malacca’s old town rewards a bit of explanation. A Famosa is the surviving gate of a Portuguese fortress the Dutch later took and rebuilt. The Stadthuys is a Dutch administrative building from the 1650s, not the church people assume it to be, and Christ Church next to it came a century later. Harmony Street runs a Chinese temple, a Hindu temple and a mosque within a few hundred metres of each other, which is a real thing about this city rather than a slogan.

You can walk all of it for nothing. That is worth knowing before you book anything. • Jonker Street — the daytime version, quieter than the weekend night market

Lunch, properly

Peranakan or Baba Nyonya cooking is what happens when Chinese ingredients meet Malay and Indonesian spicing over several centuries in one port town. Practically, that means Hainanese chicken rice balls, Nyonya laksa, and dishes you will not find cooked the same way in Kuala Lumpur. Halal and vegetarian options are readily arranged when you tell us in advance.

Timing, and why we start early

Before 10 AM is the honest answer to “when should I photograph Dutch Square”. The light is better, the coach groups have not landed, and St Paul’s Hill is climbable rather than punishing. Malacca sits about 150 km from Kuala Lumpur, roughly two hours by road, so an early start means an early pickup. It is worth it.
